It seems there have always been standards when it comes to software. For two decades, Windows held the coveted spot of the number one operating system. Further, Microsoft managed to create an excellent productivity package that became the standard across offices everywhere. Anyone without knowledge of Powerpoint, Word, Excel, and other software essentials was faced with falling to the wayside, since these programs were so pervasive. But in recent years, that iron hold on much of the software industry by the behemoth from Seattle has loosened. Competition has arrived, and it seems likely to continue to shake that formerly iron grip.

It’s easy to credit Microsoft’s longtime rival, Apple, with being behind the move away from a one-brand industry software dominance. And certainly the various incarnations of Mac OS’s over the years have provided users with steady, reliable, and, some would argue, bug free performance over the years. But it’s not just Apple that is behind these software shifts. Google too, has jumped into the fray. And Linux was almost always there, offering serious tech users a viable interface with their machines.

Along with the advent of competitive threats from these established companies, has come the advent of the cloud. This venue too has threatened the former software mainstream by bringing to the table a new threat: obsolescence. If cloud providers are to be believed, the future is a place where software won’t be purchased as it has been for decades. Instead, software as we know it may become obsolete, and only available online.

4. Holding Control plus the right arrow key moves your cursor one word to the right.

5. Have you ever written something and then realized that you have misspelled a word several times throughout your document?  If it’s a lengthy document and there are many instances of the misspelled word, that could be a tedious job to change every incorrect word.  Instead, hold Control and click the F key.  That will bring up the Find dialog box. Type in the misspelled word. Then, click the Replace tab.  Type in the correct word and then hit the Replace All button. The correct word will replace the misspelled ones.

6. Learn keyboard strokes to save time instead of removing your hand from the keyboard to use the mouse.  There’s a trick for starting a bulleted list without using a mouse. Type an asterisk and then hit the space bar.  Voila! You have a bulleted list.

Staying Safe Online

Any online experience can be a somewhat risky one, simply because there are people out there that do not play fair, and that want to disrupt your online gaming experience as much as they possibly can. When you are gaming online, any type of gaming applies; you are going to want to make sure that you are only utilizing websites and servers that are safe and secure.

Safety When Betting Online

When you participate in sports betting websites, you are often asked to give personal details about yourself. If you win prizes or money on any of these websites, then payment information, like a phone number and address are generally required. What this means is that you should only operate on websites that are actually safe and secure for you online. Operating on a website that is insecure puts all of your private information in serious risk, and there is no telling who is able to see and retrieve it.

You should only use sports betting websites that you trust. Read reviews and do some research on each site that you consider prior to logging in for the first time. What are other players telling you? General consensus is generally well worth following. If thousands of other players tell you a site is bad news, you should probably avoid it. A site with thousands of positive reviews will probably be safe and well worth playing on. You will want to keep this in mind when choosing which betting or casino websites to play on. Above all else, your safety and the safety of your personal information is important and should come first.

Theater Rooms Can Enhance Home Viewing

Creating a home theater is a great way to spend time with friends and family without having to spend a lot of money every time individuals want to catch a flick. There are a few steps that should be taken in order to create the theater. First, customers can purchase and set up home theater projectors in order to have the prime theater viewing experience. Some may prefer to stick with a traditional television set, but the projector screens can be much larger while not skimping on picture quality. A surround sound system is the next step; the number of speakers and where in the room they will be placed can be selected and installed to allow all guests to hear the movies at full volume. Some of the systems are wireless, which can improve the visual appeal of the room.

After everything has been set up and adjusted to fit the room in which it is located, individuals can sit back and relax the newest blockbuster hit. Families are sure to enjoy the theater experience at home, especially when inviting over friends to enjoy the surroundings.

Some may even choose to deck out the room with red curtains to cover the projection screen when not in use, comfortable seating equipped with cup holders, and snack machines and beverages which are easily accessible for a great viewing experience and true movie theater feel. If the room is set up with television programming, guests may also enjoy spending time with friends watching big sporting events or fights, in addition to the movie hits.

Internet in the Classroom

Teaching children the ins and outs of the Internet may not be as necessary as it used to be, especially when you consider the amount of knowledge students today have gleaned on their own home computers—knowledge they could probably teach many of their teachers.

But one thing is for sure.

Students need direction. More often than not, students are caught fiddling with computer keys when they should be listening to a lecture, playing online casino games or e-mailing friends in favor of working on their research project.

So how can teachers help?

  • When computers are not in use, turn the monitor around.
  • Use the computer on certain days and times of the week. When not in use, shut the computer off. A computer lab within the school may help with much of this if you either can’t, or decide not to have computers in the classroom.
  • Walk around the room when giving a lecture; make sure that no one is making use of a computer when it should be turned off.
  • Don’t forget you have a school library. Other resources for retrieving information like video, film strips; even in class speakers.
  • Teach your students how to use power point but not at the expense of teaching them how to give a speech with the use of a few note cards.
  • Make use of computers in group situations where the group researches a topic together and discusses the sources he or she found when searching.
  • Teach your students the difference between .com, .edu, .gov and other website tags. Not all information on the Internet is valuable, as you well know.

The Internet can be a glorious, even a hated thing in the classroom unless you handle this forward moving technology with care. Use it, enjoy it, and then put it away for another day.

Learning Excel—Getting Past the Fear

You’re trying to learn Excel but, so far, it’s outrunning you. How do you begin to understand all the formulas? How and when do you input what? When will you get to the fun stuff?

Numbers, and the terrible addition of formulas, has some of us who are less math conscious running around in circles. We don’t learn the stuff because we can’t get past the numbers. And because everything, or so it seems, is written numerically, we can’t learn the stuff.

But what if things were made simple, almost as easy as eating say, your next Hostess Twinkie?

Here’s some help:

  • See yourself working through your first Excel sheet with no difficulty. Keep this in mind as you work through the process of learning.
  • Get over the “I can’t do math” thoughts. Think positive.
  • Use the tutorials provided by Excel rather than thinking you can learn on your own through trial and error. Tutorials help you maneuver through trial and error. Or get some from your neighbor or best friend. See if they can spend a few hours tutoring you.
  • Monitor your progress. Take yourself out for a treat when certain hurdles are reached; eat that Twinkie.
  • In every program there are learning cycles in which a new concept, understood, builds upon another. Learn one skill before tackling the more difficult one.
  • How do you learn? Knowing if you are a visual, verbal or kinesthetic learner will assist you deciding upon the best option or combination of options.
  • Manage your time. Don’t spend the entire day on the computer learning Excel; you will be burned out before you know it.
  • If you don’t know something, ask. Remember when you were in elementary school and were afraid to raise your hand because you thought you’d ask a stupid question? No more of that. Ask.

Understanding anything comes easier with practice, so don’t be afraid to practice until you get it right. The fun stuff can actually be experienced NOW, during your journey, if you remember the helps above.

Use Excel for your Next Business Meeting

Business meetings may be all the rage—isn’t everyone having them? Problem is, not many folks like them, though they feel the need to attend them.

Here’s how to make your next meeting interesting, fun and successful using Excel.

  • Rather than becoming a talking head of numbers, do a quick go over of your seasonal sales using an Excel spreadsheet. Make sure you add Sources and Uses information to the spreadsheet making the presentation more interesting to your employees.
  • When talking inventory, go over the inventory management sheet. Visuals help others to understand and retain pertinent job information.
  • Pass out a calendar at the meeting using excel calendar. A great step by step tutorial on creating a calendar without using MACROs can be found here: http://www.advanced-excel.com/excel_calendar.html.
  • Use Excel Pivot Table to show off stock movement. View it by day, month or year.
  • Put together a survey through Excel that offers your employees an opportunity to express their concerns and ideas without necessarily having to have to put their name on paper.
  • Change or modify your spreadsheet, personalizing it for your specific needs and employee interests.
  • Instead of showing pertinent numbers previously calculated within your power point presentation, calculate important numbers during the meeting. This has a dramatic effect on listeners, and lets them know that you haven’t modified any of the numbers.
  • Make charts using Excel formulas. Logicalexpressions.com has some step-by-step instructions.
  • Try the interactive map. “Interactive map” means, in this case, “interactive image,” and should not be confused with an actual map. Paste pictures, drawings, and graphics, add text, and keep the crowd interested.
  • Build a game. Use the game as the half-way point or use it to explain the newest trends in your business. A great example can be found here, http://www.exceleverest.com/blog/category/Strange-Uses-of-Excel.aspx plus other “wacky” projects you can put together using Excel.

Excel truly extends beyond spread sheets and it’s nice to know that you’re no longer limited—and that’s great when you can get almost everything you need for your next business presentation from one key source.
