And Linux was almost always there, offering serious tech users a viable interface with their machines.

Along with the advent of competitive threats from these established companies, has come the advent of the cloud. This venue too has threatened the former software mainstream by bringing to the table a new threat: obsolescence. If cloud providers are to be believed, the future is a place where software won’t be purchased as it has been for decades. Instead, software as we know it may become obsolete, and only available online.

And though most of your world right now may just be the online classes you are taking or thinking about taking to increase your skills, knowing the tricks of the trade when it comes to computers will keep you at the top of your class. • Keeping in touch with your instructor through email is important, but that doesn’t mean the emails you send should be anything less than professional. Though blogs are written by experts as well as people merely interested in Excel, something happens when you learn something new and apply it. All at once you have something new to share with someone else.

But one thing is for sure.

Students need direction. More often than not, students are caught fiddling with computer keys when they should be listening to a lecture, playing online casino games or e-mailing friends in favor of working on their research project.

So how can teachers help?

• When computers are not in use, turn the monitor around.
• Use the computer on certain days and times of the week. When not in use, shut the computer off. A computer lab within the school may help with much of this if you either can’t, or decide not to have computers in the classroom.
• Walk around the room when giving a lecture; make sure that no one is making use of a computer when it should be turned off.
• Don’t forget you have a school library. Other resources for retrieving information like video, film strips; even in class speakers.
• Teach your students how to use power point but not at the expense of teaching them how to give a speech with the use of a few note cards.
• Make use of computers in group situations where the group researches a topic together and discusses the sources he or she found when searching.

Okay, so you may know the basics about Excel; how to use spreadsheets, how to calculate your budget, how to make a list of potential clients with phone numbers and addresses.

Once you open a spreadsheet, you’ll see a large page divided into cells. The first cell up in the left corner is box ‘A1,’ because it’s in column A and is on row 1. Don’t be intimidated; using a spreadsheet is easy. It is a great tool to plan out all of your necessary spending like health insurance, food, pet insurance, gas for you car, even space to save for retirement.

In cell B2, type ‘Income.’ Push tab to go to C2 (the cell to the right of B2) and type in your monthly income after taxes.

Now for your bills. Click B4 and type in ‘Bills.’ Push tab again and type your first bill in C4, like pet insurance or utilities. Don’t worry about adding the amount of each one yet; that’s in the next step. Push enter and add the next bill. Keep going down the column until you’ve added all your monthly bills.

Click in the cell to the right of each bill and begin to enter the amount of each one. The name and the amount have to be in separate boxes. For example, the box for ‘Rent’ should have it’s amount in the box to the right.

Once you have all your amounts entered, go to the end of the amounts column and click in the box below the last one. Here comes the tricky part. Type ‘=SUM(C4:C10)’ and push enter. If you have a lengthy number of bills, replace C10 with the last amount box. This little code will add all of your bills.

Lastly, in the box right below ‘Income,’ type in ‘Dis. Income.’ Push tab, type in ‘=C2-C11′ and push enter. Replace C11 with the total bill amount from the last step and you’re done. This is your disposable income.

Microsoft Excel can be difficult for new users to get around in. They may find themselves clicking the wrong areas, or have trouble locating commands within the tool bars. Navigation Within Excel

CTRL + Home – This shortcut will move you to the beginning of your worksheet. The active cell will typically become A1, or the first cell located in the top left corner of the page.

CTRL + N – These two keys open a new worksheet when pressed at the same time.

Data Selection

CTRL + Click – This keyboard shortcut will provide you with the ability to select a number of cells at one time. You would normally click your mouse and drag the cursor across the page to select more than one cell. However, by pressing the CTRL key, you can select cells that are not touching each other.

CTRL + A – These two keys, when pressed together, will allow you to select the entire worksheet.

CTRL + C – This shortcut makes a copy of the cells you have just selected. They will be appended to the clipboard, and can be pasted somewhere else on the worksheet, or into a new worksheet.

CTRL + V – Pressing these two keys together will allow you to quickly paste the cells you have previously copied.

Font Formatting in Excel

The following keyboard shortcuts will apply to the text within an active cell. Additionally, they will also alter the text within each cell if many cells are currently selected.

CTRL + B – Bolds the text

CTRL + I – Italicizes the data

CTRL + U – Underlines the text

Excel can be very helpful for recording the results of research. You can use the excel structure to record the information you find and display it in an easy to read way. The concept is easy enough to learn. You just visit the Google Docs website and sign up for their service by entering your preferred email and password. Those who already have Google services, such as Gmail or Google Calendar, will be able to use their existing username and password.

Using dates is a vital part in spreadsheets like Excel. Not only can you add the current date to any information you are entering into your spreadsheet, you can also sort information by date or locate information that was entered before or after a particular date. There is a variety of ways you can use dates using the Excel program.

You can easily sort your information in Excel from ascending (oldest to newest) or descending (newest to oldest). To sort the dates of your spreadsheet, you will highlight the cells you wish you include, and then click on the Home ribbon of the toolbar. There you will find the option to sort and filter and pick either ascending or descending order.

You can also find the number of days between two specific dates by using the DATEDIF function. This function can be used to find the number of days, months or years between two separate dates, even if they are from different years. Another function to find the number of business days between two dates is by using the NETWORKDAYS function. The EDATE function can be used to find the due date of a project or investment that falls on the same day as the date it was issued. For instance, if you have 7 months from 12/7 to finish a project, the EDATE function will show you that the due date for the project will by 7/7. Another function to find a due date that may be at the end of a particular month is the EOMONTH function.

There are many other functions that you can easily use to calculate the number of days between two dates such as the DAYS360 function or the DATEDIF function. The best way to find which works best for you is to try all the different functions. President Obama is making waves again with his recent September 2010 announcement regarding the White House’s proposed 2011 tax credit. Obama’s proposed plan aims to allocate increased tax credits for businesses spending capital on investments in 2011. Though this proposal will cost $180 billion, Obama asserts that the cost can be offset by raising taxes in the gas and oil industrial arena, as well as restructuring the taxes that multinational companies pay. A recent study conducted by Panda Security revealed that an average of 57,000 illegitimate websites crop up on a weekly basis in an attempt to gain private information from users who think they are logging onto a legitimate website. For instance, Bank of America, HSBC, Internal Revenue Service, and Visa are among the top 10 abused brand names that cybercriminals use when developing phishing websites. According to one translation of a post made by Iraq Resistance, the goal of the group is to excel over the United States; “to penetrate U.S. agencies belonging to the U.S. Army.” The virus is known as “Here you have” because that’s the subject line of each infected email.

· Online Capabilities: Now you can post your spreadsheets online so that you will be able to work on them from anywhere you want. You will also have all of the same capabilities that you would normally have whenever you choose to work in another location.
· Excel Web App: This is the application that you will use whenever you are working online. It is what will allow you to view and edit your spreadsheet from anywhere at any time.
· Excel Mobile: With the mobile version you can always stay up-to-date if you have a Smart Phone.

Once you have highlighted the data, you will then need to choose a type of pie chart. Click on the Insert button in the toolbar and then chart category.

Once you have your pie chart made, you can labels and create a title for the chart by clicking on the Layout tab in the toolbar. You will be given the choice of where to place your title, whether it is at the top of the chart, the bottom or in another area. The Format tab will give you options such as coloring the background of your chart, changing the colors of the pieces of your “pie” and choosing text effects.

When you are beginning to use the Excel program there are few things you will have to do beforehand. First you need to plan your spreadsheet. You will have to consider some key points-what is the purpose of the spreadsheet, information that needs to be included, what headings you will need to explain the information, and what the best layout of the information will be. There are also some general rules you should follow when preparing your spreadsheet-if at all possible, do not leave empty rows or columns, and enter your data in columns whenever possible. The reasons for these rules are to make using Excel’s features a bit easier and using columns will make it easier to list the items in an easy to read and titled way.

Once you have the basic idea of your spreadsheet ready, it is time to enter the data. Click on the cell where you want your data to go, type the information and hit enter and you will automatically be sent to the next cell in the column or row. Many people use the mouse to move from one cell to another, but if you want to speed up the data entry, there are a few keys that can make the process go faster. Once you enter your information, using the enter key will move the highlighted cell to the next cell in the column. The tab key will move the highlighted cell to the next cell in the row. Arrow keys can be used to enter the data and moves the active cell highlight in the direction of the arrow. The escape key will cancel the current data entry.

Some facts about cells and columns on Excel spreadsheet can be interesting. There are 65,536 rows and 256 columns making over 16 million cells in a single worksheet. To keep track of all these cells, each cell has a cell reference or address. The cell reference is the combination of the column letter and row number. The active cell address will be shown in the box above column A.
