Software’s New Face

It seems there have always been standards when it comes to software. For two decades, Windows held the coveted spot of the number one operating system. Further, Microsoft managed to create an excellent productivity package that became the standard across offices everywhere. Anyone without knowledge of Powerpoint, Word, Excel, and other software essentials was faced with falling to the wayside, since these programs were so pervasive. But in recent years, that iron hold on much of the software industry by the behemoth from Seattle has loosened. Competition has arrived, and it seems likely to continue to shake that formerly iron grip.

It’s easy to credit Microsoft’s longtime rival, Apple, with being behind the move away from a one-brand industry software dominance. And certainly the various incarnations of Mac OS’s over the years have provided users with steady, reliable, and, some would argue, bug free performance over the years. But it’s not just Apple that is behind these software shifts. Google too, has jumped into the fray. And Linux was almost always there, offering serious tech users a viable interface with their machines.

Along with the advent of competitive threats from these established companies, has come the advent of the cloud. This venue too has threatened the former software mainstream by bringing to the table a new threat: obsolescence. If cloud providers are to be believed, the future is a place where software won’t be purchased as it has been for decades. Instead, software as we know it may become obsolete, and only available online.

Collaborating on Excel Projects

The internet is ablaze with “cloud computing” solutions, ranging from options for tracking social media to synchronizing company calendars to using online software and more. One of the most powerful tools, however, is that provided by Google Docs and other cloud-based file editing programs. These are especially valuable if you’re going to collaborate on a major excel project.

The concept is easy enough to learn. You just visit the Google Docs website and sign up for their service by entering your preferred email and password. Those who already have Google services, such as Gmail or Google Calendar, will be able to use their existing username and password.

Once within the GDocs interface, you will be able to create new documents of various types, including spreadsheets. Formatting, titling, and otherwise editing these is instinctive, but sharing the document can be a little more tricky.

At the top of your document, a small lock accompanied by the word “private” should be visible, indicating that only you are able to view and edit that file. Clicking here will allow you to share it with either a group of viewers, a selection of editors, or even the general public.

Once shared, other great collaboration features kick in. You will be able to see other edits in real time, ensuring no crossed wires. You will also be able to see who is viewing the document as you work, and you can use a built-in chat feature to communicate about the work that you’re doing.

Google Docs is an especially valuable tool because it’s free to use, ensuring that you can work with anyone who has internet access. While other online editing options are available, including some official Microsoft Word options, these will not be available to those who haven’t paid for them.

Reasons Internet Companies Fail

Starting an internet company is an exciting time. The advantages to it are great. No overhead on office space, ability to work from home and an instant blip on the radar of the advertising market that is the information superhighway. So if there are so many advantages to running your business online then why is it that so many businesses fail and why is it that it’s so hard to make money online? What is everyone doing wrong? Here are two reasons why so many businesses fail online:

Unreasonable Expectations

It’s important to have goals for your business but it’s just as important to have goals that you can meet. No one goes from selling a pair of shoes a day to selling 6 million pairs a day. There has to be middle ground and that middle ground is met when people understand that growing a business takes a ton of hard work and a ton of time. Don’t believe that being your own boss could actually be easy. It will take a ton more work, and a ton more hard hours before you can actually be ready to live on easy street.

Poor Game Plan

This doesn’t seem like it’s any different from the first idea but it’s a lot different. A business has to know more about itself than what it is selling. The truth of the matter is that it has to know what it is all about. Why do people want the product? When do they want it? How does it make itself valuable to people? This all comes into how you market the product. Making a mistake on the marketing side could prove deadly in the long run. The best thing you can do is know what the game plan is and go from there. That’s what it is all about.

How Blogs Make Money

The internet is a great place to make money and sometimes that money comes in ways you don’t even realize. The next time you are on your friends blog or the next time you are on that low rent sports page you should take the time to look at the entire page and you might just be finding out that there is more money to be made on that page than you ever thought before.

Most blogs and websites out there don’t operate of their own accord. Sure the content on the site might be that of the blog authors but that doesn’t mean that everything you see is theirs. For instance, all the advertising on the side of the page and underneath the content is all by an ad company. Here’s the way it works in many cases: these sites contact advertising companies about being a part of their network. The ad companies decide if there is enough traffic for them to bother. They agree in many cases and work out a price. Many times it’s a per click price. So for every 1000 page views the ad agency might put out 5 dollars to the owner of the website. This happens and perhaps the web owner is contracted with several different web pages. Then as the clicks come in there is more than just a few networks at work. All of this is working to earn the owner of the website money. Of course there are times when a company will come along and ask to rent out the entire ad space on the site for a flat fee. Say 3 weeks for 2,000 dollars. The fact of the matter is that there is more than enough money to be made online and next time you are on a website you can look and see for yourself.

Avoiding Internet Scams

For all the good things that the Internet can do for you there is so much more about it that we have to be scared of. The problem with giving people the world at their fingertips is that you cannot always trust the world and what they intend to do with that power. For every website you go on where you can buy food and services there are a number of websites out there that are designed to take your money and leave you scrambling for an explanation as to how you could be so gullible and get duped. The truth is that sometimes the guys who are scamming you are very good. Here are a couple of ways you can avoid getting scammed online:

Don’t Answer Emails

The better advice is don’t even open the emails if they are from someone you don’t know. And no matter what those emails say make sure you leave them right where they are. There is nothing that spells trouble than an email from someone who claims to be something, anything that they might not be.

Avoid Non Trusted Websites

If you are online using a search engine many times there are sites that have a green check mark. These sites are verified and trusted to be good. These are the sites you can go on. This doesn’t mean that the other sites are bad but rather that you are better off staying to the sites you can trust, especially when it comes to putting in your money. Be careful and don’t pay for anything even if you have the slightest inclination that there might be a problem. The internet is a great place to find great deals and learn a lot but it could all blow up in your face if you aren’t careful and allow yourself to get duped.
